Western Bluebird - Western Birds

Western Bluebird in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA; 6/15/2011.
On our day trip to San Diego, while we were looking for the Cactus Garden in Balboa Park, when a male Western Bluebird (Above) landed on a Yucca Plant only a few feet from us. He put on quite a show posing for us.

Western Bluebirds are similar to their Eastern cousins, but their heads are entirely blue including the throat, while the Eastern Bluebirds orange breasts extend up to their throats. The wings of Western Bluebird have rufous scapulars, while the eastern Bluebird's wings are completely blue.

Western Bluebirds can be found along the Pacific Coast States from southern British Columbia southward to Mexico, including Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

I have seen Western Bluebirds on almost every trip out West, but the first time I was able to get a good photo was in Phoenix, 2009 (Above).
